Temporary bridge in Housatonic to open May 1

GREAT BARRINGTON — A temporary bridge in Housatonic should have traffic flowing by May 1.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation said Wednesday crews will work around the clock Monday to install the bridge in an effort to keep the Park Street/Route 183 artery open during ongoing work to the Housatonic Bridge.

The estimated $3.2 million project will not be completed until March 2018, according to the agency.

A series of recent closures resulted in this final decision after workers found more deterioration to concrete beams than anticipated,

Last summer MassDOT began work to replace the bridge superstructure, which will include new pre-stressed concrete beams, railings, sidewalks and deck.

For drivers seeking detours, message boards were installed on Route 7, Route 102 and Route 183 in Great Barrington, Stockbridge and Housatonic.

The existing footbridge will stay open for pedestrians throughout this installation and the ongoing work.

A 2015 inspection said the bridge was in critical condition.
