The Forum: S.A.Y. It Proud award winners honored

PITTSFIELD -- This school year, The Berkshire Eagle has teamed up with Pittsfield Prevention Partnership to honor monthly winners of the S.A.Y. It Proud Award -- Supporting and Acknowledging Youth.

Recipients for the month of March are all members of SADD -- Students Against Destructive Decisions.

This week, The Forum honors the middle school award winners, all chosen by faculty of the school. The high school honorees will be featured on the April 2 Learning page.

Reid Middle School: SADD co-chairs Linda Whitacre and Kristin Leonard nominated the three S.A.Y. It Proud recipients: sixth-grader Ashley Lantingua, seventh-grader Bryce Remillard and eighth-grader Roslyn Vega. The honorees were particularly active in promoting a campaign to "Stomp Out Bullying." The three students also recently led an opening exercise at the Youth Forum, hosted by the Pittsfield Prevention Partnership (PPP), to encourage respect for diversity.

Herberg Middle School: School Adjustment Counselor Tina Bardwell nominated two eighth-grade students, Mary Tullock and Rachel Hassan for their leadership with SADD. Bardwell said Tullock is able to "quickly take charge in a non-authoritative and welcoming manner so that others feel comfortable and confident to get involved too." Hassan is someone who "has a gentle personality that she balances with a clear and determined demeanor that gets things done."
