The Forum: Vets help in students' study of Vietnam

Posted

PITTSFIELD -- Taconic High School seniors are studying Vietnam and the Vietnam War era this year.

English teacher Melissa Ferris said students are reading Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried," and over the summer read "A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain," by Robert Olen Butler.

Last week, the seniors got a visit from local Vietnam veterans who shared their first-hand and anecdotal experiences about the war. During the presentation, the veterans showed photo slides and also passed around components of the uniforms they wore.

Ferris said she hopes the visit will reinforce her students literary learning.
