Thursday's golf: Taconic, Lee earn road victories in openers
GREAT BARRINGTON -- Monument Mountain's Owen Hunter took medalist honors with a 38 on the par-36 course (holes 1-8 and 10) at Wyantenuck Country Club, but Taconic's golf team earned a 15-stroke win, 170-185, in the season opener for both teams Thursday.
Matt Ferris led the way with a 41 for the Braves, while John Keegan, Mike Kays and Ross Omelenchuck shot 43s.
Hunter, meanwhile, worked around two bogeys in his round to lead the way for the Spartans.
"It was really windy down there, [but] he hit the ball real solid and didn't make any mistakes," Monument coach Rick Iemolini said.
"We didn't have much time to prepare. We've only had 1 1/2 practices [due to the weather]. It was kind of short notice for our first match, but I think they're going to do great."
Dylan Buffoni carded a 48 for Monument. Aaron Coons (49) had the day's lone birdie for Monument, on No. 10.

Matt Burdick's 44 led the way for Hoosac Valley, which features many seventh and eighth graders and had two golfers -- Nate Lapine and Derek Alibozek -- playing in their first-ever varsity match.
"We're just a young team," coach Jay Sniezek said. "We need a lot more experience. We need to work on the all-around game. Irons, short game, putting, you name it."
