Tinker leaves Spartan football coaching job for prep post

Monument Mountain Regional High School is searching for a head football coach.

Todd Tinker has stepped down from the position to join the coaching staff at East Coast Prep, a start-up, one-semester, post-graduate football academy in Great Barrington.

Tinker, who said he will serve as offensive line coach and Western Massachusetts recruiting coordinator at the school, stepped down a month ago to take the new job.

"It seemed like an opportunity I couldn't pass up," Tinker said. "It was a really hard decision for me, because of where that program is right now. It's right on the cusp of getting back to being a great team."

The Spartans won four games in Tinker's three seasons at the helm, including two this season. Monument Mountain Athletic Director Paul Gibbons is leading the search for a new coach, with candidates -- "several" from both inside and outside the Berkshire Hills Regional School District, he said -- being interviewed after next week's school vacation week.

Tinker said that, with East Coast Prep's games being mostly scheduled on Sundays -- its website lists a nine-game schedule against college junior varsity teams and community colleges -- he will still be around should the new Monument staff want any assistance.

"We're doing everything we can to keep the coaching staff intact without me, and have the assistants step up," Tinker said.
