Title to Pittsfield
PITTSFIELD -- Chris Tracy scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to lift Pittsfield to the 14-year-old Babe Ruth county championship with a 9-8 win over North Adams on Sunday at Deming Park.
Tracy scored on a Kevin Squires single through the left side of the infield to win it. Tracy had already tied the game with an RBI double.
"It's unbelievable," Pittsfield coach Eric Stone said of the walk-off win. "It brought tears to my eyes. Every one of these kids contributed to both games. That's why baseball's the ultimate team sport."
Pittsfield had to win a first game 6-3 just to force the pivotal final game. Alex Weber and Squires each had a double and an RBI in that one. Joe Puia drove in two.
Puia had a three-run triple in the second game, helping pull Pittsfield within a run after they trailed 7-3 in the third. Logan Rumbolt's triple in the top of the seventh scored Mike Strizzi, putting North Adams up 8-7 before Pittsfield won it in the bottom half.
Pittsfield now advances to the Western Mass. state tournament in Westfield.
Pittsfield 4, Brockton 3
PITTSFIELD -- The Suns scored twice in the sixth to overtake Brockton before holding on for a win at Wahconah Park.
Both the tying and winning run came home on bases-loaded walks in the inning after Jimmy Ricoy and Steve Dill were both hit by errant pitches and Zach Theulen singled. Brockton's Kyle Capaldo walked both Micael Rueger and Paul Speicher to give Pittsfield the edge.
The Rox had 10 hits but only two came after the fifth inning. Jason Condit got the win for Pittsfield, alllowing two hits over three innings. Starter Shane Beauchemin went five innings, allowing eight hits and three runs.
Both teams scored in the first. Brockton plated two with a two-run single by Rob McCunney. Pittsfield answered with a run-scoring double by Ryan Deitrich. He later came home on an error.
Brockton took the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Lupia. That set the stage for Pittsfield's big sixth inning.
The Suns return to Wahconah Park today for a doubleheader against North Shore starting at 4 p.m.
