50 years ago today

NORTH BERKSHIRE -- Two North Berkshire Marines are currently stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., after completing a 13-month tour of duty on the central Pacific island of Okinawa.

They are Lance Cpl. Robert E. Gilly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Gilly of Second St., Williamstown, and Lance Cpl. Joseph E. Sebastino of 130 Bracewell Ave., North Adams. Cpl. Gilly enlisted in April, 1960, Cpl. Sebastino in March, 1963.


NORTH ADAMS -- Boy Scout Troop 88, sponsored by the First Congregational Church, observed Boy Scout Week over the weekend by holding the fourth annual mid-winter campout at Camp Eagle.

Participating were Adrien Bissaillon, John Alexander, Gary Brallier, Robert Chilson, James Heggie, Craig King, Richard Lescarbeau, Donald Moulton, Michael Norman, Dale Ott, Francis Rogers, and Bruce Shepley. 25 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- Coakley, Pierpan, Dolan and Collins Insurance Agency, Inc., announced the promotion of two employees on its staff. Judith Ferreira has assumed the position of claims' manager at CPD&C. Ferreira comes to the agency with over seven years' experience with The Aetna Casualty & Surety Co. She is a native of Fall River and a resident of Cheshire.

Robin Martelle, a resident of North Adams and former staff assistant, is now a claims assistant and will offer support in the area of claims processing for the agency. She has been employed at by CPD&C for the last two years.


LENOX -- The McCann Hornets made Lenox their third victim of the week, 46-39, after wins over Mount Everett Monday and Whitingham Tuesday. Sam Banks put in a game-high 19 points while Brendan Hayes had a couple of key hoops to start the Hornets stretch drive offense in gear.

NORTH ADAMS -- Two Drury High School musicians have been selected to participate in this year's Massachusetts All-State Music Festival.

Billie Marie Taft, daughter of Janet and William Taft of North Adams, will be a member of this year's saxophone section in the All-State Concert Band. This will be her second trip to All-State.

Ed Horsfall, son of Nancy Horsfall of North Adams and William England-Horsfall of Stamford, Vt., will be a member of the bass section in this year's All State Chorus. This will be his first year in All-State.


CHESHIRE -- The Hoosac Valley boys' basketball team outscored Pittsfield High, 17-3 over the final 4 minutes, 14 seconds of regulation to down the Generals, 71-50, Tuesday night. It was the Hurricanes' fifth straight win and clinched them a spot in the Division 2 Western Mass. Tournament. Josh Barrett scored a team-high 17 points while Brian Skiffington added 15. Pranam Lipinski finished with 10 points and 11 assists on the day. Brandon Crouse scored 14 points and had a team-high nine rebounds and four steals.
