Tony Award nominations good for business

NEW YORK >> Earning a clutch of Tony Award nominations is usually good for business on Broadway and that was certainly true last week for shows like "Waitress," "Shuffle Along" and "The Color Purple."

The Broadway League, the theater industry's trade group, reported Monday that many of the shows that earned nominations last Tuesday posted gains over the previous week.

"Shuffle Along," a show that explores a 95-year-old musical led by pioneering African-Americans, saw a boost of $216,085 over the previous week to end at $924,352. It got 10 nominations.

"Waitress," a new musical with songs by Sara Bareilles that is adapted from a 2007 film about a waitress trapped in a loveless marriage, won four nominations and then had its best week since opening in late April, earning $960,477, up $52,000 over the previous week.

"The Color Purple," the stage version of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, got four nominations and earned $88,103 more than the previous week to bring in $967,352 for the week ending Sunday.

For some, the nominations did little or didn't help at all. "School of Rock," which got four nominations, lost $186,846 to end at $816,811, while the revival "She Loves Me," which earned eight nods, saw its box office take increase only $9,082.

Of course, some shows didn't need much help. "Hamilton," which broke a Tony record by earning 16 nominations, is as sold out now as it was all spring. Many shows long onstage — like "Matilda," "Les Miserables," and "Jersey Boys" — showed declines as attention turned to the new shows.

The relative lack of nominations also may have hurt both "American Psycho," which lost $104,485 over the previous week, and "Tuck Everlasting," which fell $57,241. Each got only one nomination.
