Town Players of Pittsfield set for Mum Bett reading


PITTSFIELD -- Town Players of Pittsfield is staging a reading of local playwright Jesse Waldinger’s short play "Mum Bett’s Minute" 3 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 and 7 p.m. Aug. 21.

Saturday’s reading is part of the Mum Bett Day observance at the Ashley House on Cooper Hill Road in Ashley Falls.

The Aug. 21 reading is at the Whitney Center for the Arts, 42 Wendell Ave., Pittsfield, as part of Third Thursday.

Mum Bett, aka Elizabeth Freeman, was a Sheffield slave who went to court to sue for her freedom in 1781.

Actors Jon Slocum, Marla Robertson, and Andrew Joffe will be directed by Barbara Waldinger. The play will be preceded by a short dance inspired by the play, choreographed and performed by Marla Robertson.

Admission to both events is free.
