Town Players slates "Cripple of Inishmaan" reading


PITTSFIELD >> Town Players of Pittsfield is presenting a staged reading of Martin McDonagh's "The Cripple of Inishmaan" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Whitney Center for the Arts, 42 Wendell Ave.

Becky Straight is directing cast whose members include Marya LaRoche, Colleen Surprise Jones, Derek Ormond, Joey LaBrasca, Devin Trager, Gabrielle D. Straight, Jerry Greene, John Trainor and Patricia Duckworth.

Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland in 1934, "The Cripple of Inishmaan" is a comic tale in the tradition of Irish storytelling. As word arrives on Inishmaan that Hollywood director Robert Flaherty is coming to the neighboring island of Inishmore to film "Man of Aran," the one person who wants to be in the film more than anybody is young Cripple Billy, if only to break away from the bitter tedium of his daily life.

The play contains strong language.
