Trio indicted in Berkshire Superior Court on heroin bust

PITTSFIELD — Three suspects accused of transporting nearly 1,000 bags of heroin from Springfield to North Adams have been indicted by a Berkshire County grand jury.

Dale A. Crittelli, 36, and Kristina C. Crittelli, 32, both of Adams and Gavin R. Mahar, 23, of North Adams were arraigned on drug possession and conspiracy charges in Berkshire Superior Court on Monday before Judge Maureen Hogan.

In May, police had received information that Mahar and another man, Tony Mejias, of North Adams, were traveling to Springfield, where it was believed they were going to purchase a large amount of heroin for transport back to Berkshire County.

Police allege the Crittellis were transporting Mahar and Mejias to Springfield in exchange for drugs and gas money.

North Adams Police pulled over the vehicle for speeding upon its return to the area. The occupants allegedly gave inconsistent stories about their night.

A police canine unit was brought in to search the vehicle and alerted police to a backpack containing about 977 bags of heroin, worth approximately $9,770, police said.

Mejias, 35, recently pleaded guilty to charges in this case and another drug case and was sentenced to up to four years in prison.

All three remaining defendants pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of heroin with intent to distribute and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

The Crittellis were released on personal recognizance. Mahar was released on $5,000 bail already posted in the lower court.

All three are due back in court on Oct. 26 for pretrial hearings.
