Turners Falls woman pleads not guilty to vehicular homicide


DEERFIELD >> The driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a homeless man riding his bicycle in Deerfield last summer has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide charges.

The Recorder repo<URL destination="http://bit.ly/1IElvzP">rts that Karen Sanders was released on personal recognizance after her arraignment Tuesday in Greenfield District Court.

Poli</URL>ce say the 68-year-old Turners Falls woman struck the bicycle operated by Chester Tela from behind just after 4 p.m. on July 21 after drifting into the breakdown lane of Routes 5 and 10.

Tela died in the hospital the next day. The autopsy confirmed that he died of injuries sustained in the crash.

Sanders stopped at the scene to assist. She told investigators that she saw the bicyclist but had been experiencing "equilibrium issues."
