Two Berkshire assistant district attorneys earn awards

PITTSFIELD >> Two members of the Berkshire District Attorney's Office have been recognized for their respective work in the superior and district courts.

Joseph Pieropan recently was named the 2016 William C. O'Malley Prosecutor of the Year and Jeffrey K. Clarke received the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association Spotlight award.

Pieropan began his career as an administrative intern in 1984 before attending law school, and served as a legal intern in 1986.

He was appointed as an assistant district attorney in 1987 and prosecuted cases in the district, juvenile and superior courts before becoming the chief of appeals in 2000.

In that role, Pieropan oversees the office's appellate work including arguing cases before the state's Appeals and Supreme Judicial courts.

Pieropan was nominated for the honor by Berkshire District Attorney David F. Capeless, the current president of the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association, and the award was voted on by the 11 members of that association.

"Joe's career as a prosecutor is an example of selfless dedication to justice and service on behalf of the public, and he is most deserving of the award," Capeless said in a statement. "It was my pleasure to nominate him, and all of us in the office are proud of Joe and for him."

Capeless himself was the first recipient of the award in 1996, and current First Assistant District Attorney Paul J. Caccaviello received the honor in 2008.

The O'Malley Award is a lifetime achievement award given in memory of William C. O'Malley, the district attorney of Plymouth County from 1979 until his sudden death in April 1995.

Clarke, meanwhile, was presented with the Spotlight Award, which is given each year to an assistant district attorney from each district's office in recognition of "their outstanding service, spirit and professionalism," according to Capeless' office.

"Jeff is a great of example of what it means to be a team player in the busy district courts," said Chief District Court Prosecutor Dana A. Parsons in a statement. "Jeff consistently steps up to help his co-workers whenever issues or needs arise."

"He is supportive, solid and a positive illustration of a successful and dedicated Assistant District Attorney," Parsons said.

Capeless and other members of the office nominated Clarke, who joined the office in 2013.
