Union representing Stop & Shop workers postpones Sunday meeting in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD >> The union that represents the majority of Berkshire County's Stop & Shop employees has postponed meetings that had been scheduled for Sunday to possibly consider a new three-year contract.

Springfield-based Local 1459 of the United Food and Commercial Workers decided to postpone the meetings they had scheduled in both Pittsfield and Westfield because it does not have a contract offer for its members to consider.

The meetings will be rescheduled when there is a settlement to consider, according to a post on UFCW's website.

The Pittsfield meeting was scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. at the IUE Hall at 789 Tyler St. Local 1459 represents 245 employees at Berkshire County's three Stop & Shop outlets.

"While the company has continued to advance unsatisfactory contract proposals, there has been some movement in negotiations," according to an announcement on Local 1459 website.

"In a show of good faith we are temporarily suspending our vote to give Stop & Shop the opportunity to put together a fair deal that rewards our hard work."

Negotiating sessions are scheduled to take place Saturday and Sunday in Providence, R.I.

Local 1459 is one of five UFCW collective bargaining units represening 34,000 workers in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island that are currently negotiating a three-year contract with Stop & Shop.
