'Up on the Roof' theme of Oldies Show to benefit July 4 parade
PITTSFIELD — Singing "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Higher and Higher" the Oldies but Goodies Rock 'n' Roll Show looks to soar this weekend at Reid Middle School.
The 23 cast members, along with live band under the direction Brian Benlien, will stage "Up on the Roof," which takes place at the fictitious Park Square Hotel. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Proceeds benefit the Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade, which each year sets a fundraising goal of $85,000 to pay for the Independence Day celebration through the city's downtown. The three previous Oldies performances have raised, on average, between $10,000 and $12,000, according to parade committee President Peter Marchetti.
"These guys enjoy singing and we're honored to be the recipient of their hard work," he said during a recent rehearsal. "The parade doesn't come together overnight and neither does the show."
Rehearsals begin in late July as the gifted local talent is learning more than 30 classic hits from the '60s and '70s under the direction of co-producers Peggy Bordeau and Donna Phair.
As opening night approaches, the show is coming together thanks to a cohesive cast, according to Phair.
"The camaraderie makes it work," she said. "We truly enjoy each other, like each other and support each other."
From lead singer, to back-up, to comic relief, each cast member knows his/her role in the show, including Lew Markham.
"I can sing with the group," he said during a rehearsal break. "Solo I can't."
Markham is best know for the comedic one-liners he delivers from a well written script.
"To Peggy's credit, most of the jokes and lead-in to the show is her creativity," he said.
Charles Redd, of Dalton, has been an Oldies cast member from the group's inception 16 years ago.
"It amazes me people still come out to see us," he said. "I think it's because we're having fun on the stage."
