Up to six years in prison for Pittsfield man in rape, assault of woman

PITTSFIELD >> A city man has been sentenced to up to six years in prison for sexually assaulting and abusing a woman over the course of nearly a year and a half.

Edward O'Bert, 34, admitted that he raped the woman and attacked her with various implements, including a fork and steak knife, on numerous occasions.

The assaults occurred in Pittsfield between Dec. 1, 2011, and April 16, 2013, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's office.

O'Bert pleaded guilty in Berkshire Superior Court on Tuesday to three counts of rape and one count each of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery.

Judge John Agostini sentenced him to four to six years in state prison on the rape and assault with a dangerous weapon charges and gave him a 2 1/2-year jail sentence on the assault and battery charge, which will be served concurrently with his prison sentence.

O'Bert was arraigned on the charges in December 2014 in Berkshire Superior Court.

He will serve his sentence at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction.

The investigation was conducted by members of the Pittsfield Police Department.
