Vermont State Police investigate break-in at Pownal race track
POWNAL, VT>> Authorities are seeking information about a reported burglary at the former Green Mountain Race Track.
According to Vermont State Police, authorities were notified on Friday that a break-in had occurred at the Route 7 property about 48 hours before.
Investigating troopers determined one or more individuals forcibly entered the grandstand building by breaking a basement window on the west side. The break-in occurred sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.
"Schematics were destroyed and other items were disheveled," a press release issued Saturday by Trooper Benjamin Barton of the Shaftsbury Barracks stated.
Anyone with more information is encouraged to contact the Vermont State Police, Shaftsbury Barracks at 802-442-5421. Information can also be submitted anonymously online at www.vtips.info or by texting "CRIMES" (274637) with the keyword: VTIPS.
The Route 7 site was a dog and horse racing venue before it closed in 1992. The 60,000 squarefoot grandstand building remains. A 15 acre, 2.2 megawatt solar facility on the southern side of the 144-acre property went online in 2013. "No trespassing" warnings and signs advising video surveillance are posted around the site. The current owners seek to revitalize the track as an event and performance venue. —Edward Damon
