Monday June 4, 2012

SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- The Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts has a new bishop.

The Rev. Douglas John Fisher was elected Saturday on the third ballot out of a field of five nominees at Christ Church Cathedral in Springfield.

The 57-year-old Fisher is the rector of Grace Church in Millbrook, N.Y.

He says he is "overwhelmed, humbled and honored" by his election.

Fisher is expected to be consecrated on Dec. 1 at the MassMutual Center to succeed the Rt. Rev. Gordon Paul Scruton, who was elected in 1996 and is retiring.

Fisher was previously pastor of Holy Innocents in Highland Falls, N.Y. and chaplain to U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Fisher is married with three children.

The diocese has about 16,650 members in 63 congregations.
