Wahconah softball wins sixth in a row, beating Taconic

DALTON -- Style points weren't important.

Wahconah Regional softball coach Dustin Belcher said he wasn't happy with the mistakes -- both mental and physical -- that his team made on Tuesday at Pinegrove Park. All that mattered to the Warriors was that the 9-8 win over Taconic gave them a sixth consecutive victory.

"It's good that we can battle through it and come out with a win on a tough day like this," said Wahconah center fielder Erin Grogan.

Grogan had two of Wahconah's six hits as the Warriors were outhit by the Braves 9-6. But Taconic made four errors to three for Wahconah, and that cost the Braves some runs. Tierney Crocker and Kadie Dickson each had two hits for Taconic. Dickson also drove in two runs.

Wahconah scored four runs on one hit in the bottom of the fifth inning to come back from an 8-5 deficit. The eventual game-winning run was scored by Bridget Lussier, who came home from third base on Bethany McBain's sacrifice bunt.

"It wasn't pretty. We couldn't execute. We were sloppy defensively. We left some base runners on in different innings," said Belcher. "It definitely wasn't pretty. But give Taconic credit. They battled.

"They got down 4-0 and really battled back. I tip my cap to them."

And that was one thing Taconic coach Kevin Harrington and his players could take.

"They've got a lot of fight in them," Harrington said. "We made a few mistakes early, but they're a good group of girls and fight hard.

"We've got to minimize our mistakes because our offense is good."

Taconic took a 6-5 lead into the top of the fifth, and extended its lead to three runs on a single, sacrifice bunt and an error. Tierney Crocker, who was 3 for 4, led off the inning with a solid single to left. Anna Sarabia put down a bunt, but third baseman Shannon Lussier airmailed a throw down the right-field line for an error that allowed both runners to come around and score.

Wahconah loaded the bases on an error and two walks to open the home fifth. A wild pitch scored Gabby Lavinio, and Bizzy King came home from third after Bridget Lussier struck out but took first on a passed ball. Shannon Lussier's infield single loaded the bases. Bayleigh MacHaffie tied the score on a groundout to Amanda Ely at short for the first out. Then McBain dropped down a bunt that brought Bridget Lussier home with the go-ahead run. Taconic pitcher Carly Decker had only one play, and got McBain at first. Grogan made the final out.

From that point, Wahconah pitcher Becca Grunow stepped to the fore.

Grunow, who gave up five earned runs, gave up a one-out single to Lauren Aitken in the sixth inning, but the senior right-hander retired the final five hitters she faced. In the seventh, Crocker popped to Chloe Warren at second and then got Sarabia on a grounder to shortstop Gabby Lavinio and Dickson hit a one hopper back to Grunow to end the game.
