Wednesday's colleges: Honor for Ephs women's track/field coach


WILLIAMSTOWN -- Williams College women's track and field head coach Nate Hoey has been named the New England Division III coach of the year.

The first-year head coach was honored by the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

Hoey's team won the New England Division III title beating favored MIT and defending champion Tufts. Eleven members of the women's team are competing this weekend in the NCAA Division III meet at Nebraska Wesleyan.

MCLA softball splits

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The MCLA softball team finished its Florida sojourn by splitting a pair of games. In the first game, Williams beat Ohio Wesleyan 10-2, in a game stopped after five innings. Then MCLA dropped a 9-3 decision to the College of Wooster.

It was 2-2 in the first game, when the Ephs erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth. Sierra Bailey had a big, two-run double for the Trailblazers. It was the only extra-base hit of the game.

Rachel Quackenbush got the win. She gave up two runs, one earned, on seven hits and she struck out seven.

In the second game, the Trailblazers scored three unearned runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 3. From there, Wooster scored six unanswered runs to win going away.

Amanda Meczywor took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits. Only three of the runs were earned. Quackenbush gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit in three innings of relief.

Offensively, Quackenbush was 3 for 4 in the doubleheader while Bailey was 3 for 6 with a run scored and two RBI.

MCLA finishes its Florida trip 3-7.
