Wednesday's Colleges: Williams women top Union in lax


CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Williams College women's lacrosse team has started its season off in style.

The 15th-ranked Ephs improved their record to 5-1 with a 13-8 win over Union College (2-2) on Wednesday.

The game was tied 5-5 at halftime, but the Ephs outscored the Dutchwomen 8-3 in the second half.

Rebecca McGovern led the way for Williams with two goals and three assists. Maeve Mulholland, Natalie Gill and Stephanie Gallo all had two goals each for the Ephs.

Emily McGrail had a hat trick for Union, coached by former Williams three-sport athlete Abi Jackson.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Williams men took 11th-ranked Union into overtime, but came up a goal short as the Dutchmen beat the Ephs 8-7.

Williams trailed 6-3 after three quarters but scored four unanswered goals in the fourth. Tanner MacIvor's goal with 7:52 left put the Ephs up 7-6. Union's Tom Stanton tied the game with 1:46 to go and Jake Quinn scored in overtime to end the game.

MacIvor led Williams (5-2) with two goals and an assist, while Jack Lauroesch had two goals.

Williams splits in baseball

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Ephs beat Concordia (Wisc.) 13-11 in the first game of a doubleheader, but lost 4-3 in the nightcap.

Williams jumped out to a 11-1 lead after 212 innings, but Concordia came back to make the game close. Dylan Gausman, the third pitcher for Williams, tossed 123 innings of scoreless baseball to claim the save.

In the nightcap, Concordia's Austin Baglow gave up three unearned runs on only four hits in going the distance for the win.

Matt Kastner and Luke Pierce had good doubleheaders for the Ephs. Castner was 4 for 5 with three runs scored and three runs batted in, while Pierce was 4 for 7 with three runs scored.
