West Stockbridge narrowing search for new police chief

WEST STOCKBRIDGE >> The search for a new police chief should soon be narrowed to two or three finalists.

Town Administrator Mark Webber told the Select Board this week the Police Chief Search Committee, launched Sept. 3, has reviewed 23 applications — three of which were from Berkshire County.

After the latest meeting on Sept. 24, Webber said, the committee whittled the list to five names, two of which are from within the county.

Those semifinalists have been sent a list of four questions that will require an answer by Friday.

The questions, said Select Board Chairman Curt Wilton, will help the Search Committee and, ultimately, the selectmen, "get a handle on the candidates and how they think."

Webber said the committee has at least one more meeting scheduled and hopes to be able to present the board with two to three finalists by the board's Oct. 17 meeting.

Wilton said the board will announce the finalists on that date and set up interviews with them.

"The interviews will probably not be that night," said Webber.

The town is seeking to replace former chief Thomas Rubio, who left the post in July after about five years on the job, Webber said. He is presently an officer in the Stockbridge Police Department.

In other business, the board heard a report from Selectman Earl Moffatt on the town's efforts to purchase a new van for the Council on Aging. Moffatt said he has looked at several vendors and is negotiating to purchase a 2015 Dodge van for the town.

Moffatt said he hoped the board will be able to vote on the purchase before the winter sets in.

The mileage on the vehicle is about 3,000 miles, he said, and the van has front-wheel drive.
