West Stockbridge top cop search narrowing

WEST STOCKBRIDGE — The search for a new police chief should be down to three finalists by Oct. 3.

That was the word from the Select Board this week on the efforts of a search committee, which has been poring through resumes of a total of 23 candidates.

"They've already met once and they have at least one and maybe two more meetings scheduled," said Town Administrator Mark Webber. "We're hoping ... to have the names of three or at least two finalists."

Three of the applications are from within Berkshire County, Webber said.

The board did not know when finalist interviews would begin, but they will be in open session.

Former Police Chief Thomas Rubino resigned in June to accept a patrolman's position on the Stockbridge Police Department. Rubino served as a chief for more than five years.

Officer Francis Murphy is overseeing the seven-person, part-time department.
