Westborough school official charged with embezzlement

WESTBOROUGH, MASS. >> Prosecutors say the budget officer at a Massachusetts school district defrauded his employer of hundreds of thousands of dollars to fuel his drug addiction.

Christopher Hoey was held on $100,000 bail after pleading not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday to multiple charges, including larceny and embezzlement by a public official.

Authorities say the 36-year-old Hoey stole the money while working for the Northborough-Southborough School District. The exact amount he allegedly stole is estimated at between $200,000 and $400,000.

Police say Hoey told them he had a "serious" addiction to the opioid prescription painkiller Percocet and cocaine. The thefts are alleged to have gone on for several years.

Hoey could not be reached for comment.
