Western Mass. Division III tennis roundup: Lee girls upset No. 2 Frontier

Posted

SOUTH DEERFIELD — Despite missing No. 1 singles player Suriana Lee, the Lee Wildcats girls tennis team upset Frontier 3-2 on Thursday.

The seventh-seeded Wildcats (14-3) held off No. 2 Frontier to advance to the Western Mass. Division III semifinals. They will play the winner of No. 3 South Hadley vs. No. 6 Mohawk.

Lee won only one of three singles matches, as No. 2 singles Sarah Winston won 6-4, 6-2. The Wildcats' second doubles squad took three sets to win, as Kate Delsignor and Anna Wang won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

And because there were only four courts, the two squads had to sit and wait as first doubles played after everyone else with the score 2-2. Lee prevailed, as Angelique Nejaime and Maddie DeSantis won in straight sets.

"Both doubles, the whole match could have gone either way," Lee coach Norma Comalli said. "We didn't know who would win. It was very exciting."
