Western Mass. roundup: Monument Mountain boys top Sabis

GREAT BARRINGTON — The Monument Mountain boys tennis team advances to the Western Massachusetts Division III final with a sweep of Sabis on Monday.

The Spartan boys will face Belchertown today at 4:30 p.m.

Monument dominated the Bulldogs, winning each match in straight sets. Monument's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams did not drop a game, winning 6-0, 6-0. Jack White dropped only two games at No. 3 singles, beating Chris Calvanese 6-1, 6-1.

BELCHERTOWN GIRLS 3, MONUMENT MOUNTAIN 2

BELCHERTOWN >> The Belchertown girls tennis team used its strong singles play to defeat Monument. The Orioles avenged their semifinal loss to Monument last season.

Cara Freadman battled with Belchertown's No. 1 singles player Meghan Benard, but Benard was too strong winning 6-2, 6-2. The Orioles won all their singles matches in straight sets. Carly Shafiroff and Hailey Higgins, and Olivia Jaffe and Gabby DeFelice earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. Shafiroff and Higgins defeated Maddie Hamparian and Angela Grabazs 6-2, 6-4. Jaffe and DeFelice defeated Brook O'Neal and Emily Hamparian 6-0, 6-1.

"Cara played well, but Meghan has an outstanding game." Monument coach Jeff Caligari said of his top singles player. "We knew it was going to be a tough match. They have nothing to be ashamed of. They all played well. Belchertown was the better team today.

"They were upset [after the match]. But tomorrow when they look back at the year, they'll feel better."

STATE INDIVIDUAL TENNIS MATCH-UPS SET

Monument Mountain doubles pair Hailey Higgins and Carly Shafiroff now know their opponents for the MIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament.

The duo, which won the Western Mass. doubles tournament in May, will face off against Martha's Vineyard duo Elizabeth Williamson and Victoria Scott.

Williamson and Scott won the South tournament over Barnstable duo Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall 6-1, 6-0. On the other side of the bracket, Shrewsbury duo Micaela Stowe and Felicia Xia will face off against Winchester's Izzy Bruno and Brooke Scully.

The state tournament will be played on June 18 at St. John's (Shrewsbury). The singles semifinals will begin at 9 a.m., with the doubles semifinals scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. The championship matches will commence in the afternoon. The make-up date is scheduled for June 19.

GIRLS LACROSSE

GROTON-DUNSTABLE 15, MOUNT GREYLOCK 4

Groton-Dunstable defeated Mount Greylock on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Central/Western Massachusetts Division II tournament. The Mounties finish the season 16-4.
