Wife denies scooter assault
PITTSFIELD -- A Pittsfield woman accused of attacking her spouse with a scooter and bottle of cognac has pleaded not guilty to several charges in Central Berkshire District Court.
Tabatha M. Leggette, 26, was arrested by the Pittsfield Police on Monday about 7:15 p.m. and charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, and breaking and entering in the daytime for a felony.
Police responded to an Onota Street address on Monday for a report of a domestic disturbance after Sedonia McGirt called 911.
Leggette told police that she and McGirt have been legally married for about a year, but don't live together. She said she went over to the house to pick up her child and that McGirt locked her out. During an altercation, McGirt, 38, poured a bottle cognac on her, Leggette told police.
McGirt's version of events was different. According to the police report, Leggette's sister has custody of the child whom McGirt was baby-sitting when Leggette tried to come into the house. McGirt told her to leave, but Leggette refused, smashed a front window with her fist and eventually made her way inside by breaking in through the back door. Once in the house, said police, she smashed through the bedroom door and attacked McGirt, slapping her and yanking an earring out of her ear.
Back downstairs, Leggette hit McGirt with a child's scooter before rushing at her with a bottle of cognac in her hand, the report states.
In the ensuing struggle, the liquor spilled onto Leggette, McGirt told police.
Leggette was given a court-appointed lawyer, released on personal recognizance, and told to return to court for a pretrial hearing July 12.
