Wilco announces Solid Sound Festival's June 2017 return to Mass MoCA
NORTH ADAMS — Solid Sound, Schmolid Schmound.
Just a month after the release of its newest album, "Schmilco," Chicago alt-rock band Wilco on Thursday alerted its followers on social media that it plans to return to North Adams.
The Solid Sound Festival, which it hosts every other year at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, will be held from June 23-25, 2017.
"Look out, here we come again and we're bringing our friends," Wilco posted on its Facebook page.
Formed in 1994, Wilco, the band launched Solid Sound in 2010 and has held festivals in 2011, 2013, 2015 and now 2017 that draw thousands of visitors into downtown North Adams and campgrounds throughout the Northern Berkshires every other summer.
Since its last trip to North Adams, Wilco has released two new albums: "Star Wars," shortly after the 2015 Solid Sound Festival, and "Schmilco," its 10th studio album, just last month.
The museum has also been busy since Wilco's last trip to North County.
The 2017 Solid Sound Festival will be its fifth iteration, but the first since the more than $50 million phase III renovation project at Mass MoCA began in full last year. Expected to be complete and open to the public by Memorial Day Weekend, the project included the renovation of 130,000 square feet of gallery space at Mass MoCA's 16-acre campus and improved festival amenities.
"We expect to have improved artist service facilities as well as some improved facilities for festival audiences," said Jodi Joseph, Mass MoCA's director of communications.
