Williams College women reach NCAA Division III basketball round of 16
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Williams College women have advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Basketball Tournament.
NESCAC player of the year Claire Baecher had a game-high 22 points and the Ephs held Rochester without a point for the first 7 minutes of the second half as they rallied for a 68-60 victory Saturday at the Alexandra Palestra.
With the win, the Ephs will play in a Sweet 16 game Friday against the winner of Saturday night's game between Ithaca and Smith College. The site has yet to be determined.
Baecher pulled down 9 rebounds and blocked 5 shots for the Ephs.
The Yellowjackets led 30-28 at halftime and got the first shot at the basket. Breanna Madrazo missed the jumper, Danny Rainer rebounded and Jennie Harding completed the play with a 3-point shot that put the Ephs up 31-30.
From that point, the Williams defense kicked into high gear, as Rochester was held scoreless until Katie Weiner hit a free throw with 12:58 left in the game. Nearly eight minutes ticked off the clock before the Yellowjackets hit another basket -- a trey by Kristyn Wright with 12:27 left.
Williams iced the victory by going 8 for 8 from the foul line in the final 30 seconds. Baecher made her two, while Harding drained all six of her free throw attempts.
Rainer finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the Ephs. Harding scored only 9 points, but got all of them in the second half.
