Williams men's basketball wins opener, while men's hockey loses to Bowdoin
WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Williams College men's hockey team was defeated 2-0 by Bowdoin in the team's season opener.
Bowdoin scored on a power play goal from Harry Matheson in the first period and added a goal by Robert Toczylowski with about two minutes left in the contest.
Eph goalie Sean Dougherty had 30 saves. Williams plays at Colby today at 3 p.m.
The Ephs defeated Southern Vermont College 81-51 in the first round of the Williams Tip-Off Classic, which was also the team's opening game.
Salem State defeated Coast Guard Academy, 87-60 in the other game of the Classic. Williams will play Salem today at 3 p.m. in the championship game.
Williams took a 40-22 lead at the half, led by Michael Mayer's 17 points. After intermission, the Ephs continued to push the ball up the floor, an the lead eventually ballooned to 32. Mayer led all scorers with 23 points. Taeshon Johnson and Tavaris Jenkins led Southern Vermont (0-1) with 13 points.
