Williams women in NCAA tournament
The Williams College wom en's golf team is headed to its third consecutive NCAA Division III Champ ionship this week in Angola, Ind. The tournament begins Tuesday and will be played over the par-71, 6,384-yard Zollner Golf Course on the campus on Trine University.
Third-year coach Erika DeSanty's team won six of the eight tournaments it played in this fall and spring, culminating with a victory in the Williams Spring Invitational at Taconic Golf Club last week.
Williams, which finished eighth in last year's NCAA tournament, is currently ranked No. 8 in the national coaches' poll. The Ephs should benefit from the experience gained in last year's tournament in Florida. Four golfers from that team -- sophomores Georgi Salant and Emily Wickstrom and juniors Victoria Student and Becky Miller -- played in the 2011 event.
The Ephs have now qualified for the tournament five times in the eight years women's golf has been a varsity spot. Williams has finished in the top 10 all five times with a best of seventh place in 2010.
There's little doubt about the team to beat. Top-ranked Methodist College (N.C.) has won a mind-boggling 14 straight national titles and 24 in 26 years.
Meanwhile, Rick Pohle's men's team, fell short of an NCAA trip, finishing second to Middlebury College in the NESCAC tournament. Middle bury won by eight shots.
