Williams women lose to Plattsburgh in NCAA D-III hockey

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The clock struck midnight for the Williams College women’s hockey team on Saturday.

Gabrielle Vukasin scored the game’s first goal in the second minute of the first period in the Ephs first NCAA Division III tournament game in a decade. But unfortunately for the Ephs, Plattsburgh’s Ali Vakos scored the next four as the Cardinals eliminated the Ephs 4-1.

Plattsburgh was the nation’s No. 1 team, but came into the tournament as an at-large team after losing to Elmira in the ECAC West title game.

It took the Cardinals a while to get on the board. Vakos scored her first goal at 18:33 of the first period, and the teams were tied after one.

Plattsburgh took the lead for keeps just 28 seconds into the second period on Vakos’ second goal. Giovanna Senese, who assisted on the first goal, got the lone helper on the second.

The Williams defense and goalie Charlie Billadeau were under siege all day. The Cardinals unleashed 49 shots on goal and Billadeau made 45 saves.

Plattsburgh goalie Sydney Aveson, a transfer from Division I Minnesota State, had 24 saves.

The Plattsburgh defense did a nice job limiting offense from Williams’ top two scorers. Forward Cristina Bravi recorded only one shot on goal and defenseman Hanna Beattie had only two shots.
