Williams’ title run ended by Trinity in rowing

INDIANAPOLIS -- There will be no ninth consecutive NCAA Division III rowing championship for the Will iams College women.

The Ephs had their championship streak snapped Sat urday by NESCAC rival Trinity. Williams and Bates tied for second with 33 points, but Williams is the national runner-up due to its second-place finish in the Varsity 1 eights race. Bates was fourth in the race and third overall.

Trinity earned 30 points for its win in the Varsity 1 eights race. The Bates boat took an early lead, and at the 1,000-meter mark had a four-seat lead on the Williams boat.

The Ephs pulled past Bates some 250 meters later, but the Trinity eights came from behind and took the lead with 300 meters to race.

The winning time for Trinity was 7 minutes, 6.33 seconds. Williams’ time was 7:08.05, while Wellesley took third.

The Varsity 2 eights Grand Final was an all-NESCAC affair with Williams, Bates, Wesleyan and Trinity in the water.

The Bates boat took the lead at the start and never relinquished it, finishing in 7:18.97. Williams finished fourth in 7:36.77.
