Williamstown: Girl Scouts to dedicate 'Buddy Bench'
Junior Girl Scout Troop 12940 will dedicate a "buddy bench" it has donated to Williamstown Elementary School at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, prior to the school's annual open house for families.
A buddy bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. A child feeling lonely or needing a playmate sits on the bench as a signal to the other children to come play with him or her.
The troop came up the idea to donate a buddy bench to WES last spring in honor of their friend and classmate Eve Claffey, who passed away at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.
Throughout the spring and summer, the girls helped design and decorate the bench. Broadway Carpentry donated the reclaimed wood and their time for the bench, and the Fund for Williamstown provided a grant to help pay for the plaque attached to the bench that honors Eve.
The bench was placed on the school playground just before the opening day of school this year, and troop members introduced the concept behind the bench to the student body at an all-school assembly.
