Williamstown man held in $500K bail on kidnapping, assault charges
NORTH ADAMS -- A Williamstown man is being held on $500,000 cash bail on charges that he kidnapped and assaulted two unidentified victims in 2013.
Ernest Harvin, 38, of Henderson Road, was armed with a handgun when he cornered two people who owed him money for drugs and threatened to kill them some time last year, according to a criminal complaint filed by state police.
One of the alleged victims came forward to police on May 12, according to the report.
Harvin, who goes by the street name "Ezus," fronted the victims as many as 500 bags of heroin at a time, according to the report. When they amassed a debt, Harvin allegedly assaulted and threatened them with a handgun.
He was arraigned in Northern Berkshire District Court on Friday on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of kidnapping, firearm use in a felony, possession of a firearm without a firearm identification card, and assault and battery. Bail was set at $500,000 cash on the kidnapping charges and, in another case, Harvin's bail was set at $300,000 on a charge of heroin possession with intent to distribute.
In September 2013, Harvin was arrested on drug possession and illegal gun charges after allegedly leading police on a chase through Williamstown. Police cited confidential informants with helping track Harvin down.
The report notes that Harvin also faces a number of open cases in Berkshire Superior Court for alleged possession of a sawed-off shotgun, firearm use in a felony, and heroin possession with intent to distribute. Harvin posted $50,000 cash bail on March 14 and was released from Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction, according to the report. The bail in that case has been revoked.
Harvin has a lengthy criminal record in New York state as well, which was listed in the report. He was convicted of attempted murder in a Bronx County court in 1994, pleaded guilty to third-degree assault in 1998, and was convicted as a felon in possession of a firearm in 2000.
