Williamstown: Pie contest winners named

Wednesday October 31, 2012

The ninth annual Williamstown Pie Contest, held Oct. 27 at Sheep Hill, the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation’s headquarters, celebrated bakers of all ages and the variety of local products available for creating pies.

The pies were judged before being offered to the public for tasting, and voting for the People’s Choice Award.

In the Youth division, which had the largest number of entries, second place was awarded to Ethan Hayes for his Triple Playpie, featuring apples and cider doughnuts. His pie was also the winner of the People’s Choice award.

First place was won by Cate Cangelosi with an apple pie. Cangelosi began baking with her grandmother at a very young age, and the Cangelosi family took first in the Home Baker category with its Caramel Pumpkin Meringue pie.

An authentic tarte tatin, baked by Cindy Jan, an exchange student from France attending Mount Greylock Regional High School, won second place. The Store at Five Corners’ Smoked Gouda Quiche was the winner in the professional category.

Prizes for the contest were donated in part by Storey Publishing in North Adams.

The contest was followed by a hike on Sheep Hill under the almost full Hunter’s Moon.
