Winning streak is over for MCLA men in basketball


BRIDGEWATER -- The MCLA men's basketball team started its MASCAC schedule off with five straight wins to take the conference lead. Wednesday night, that streak came to an end.

Bridgewater State's Brendan Monteiro came off the bench to score a game-high 27 points as the Bears (8-9, 3-3 in MASCAC) handed the Trailblazers (8-10, 5-1) an 89-80 defeat.

The score was tied at 38 at halftime, but Bridgewater outscored MCLA by nine points, taking the lead for keeps on two Monteiro free throws with 13:42 left to play in the game.

Paul Maurice had 19 points for the Trailblazers, while John Jones had 14 and Vernon Cross 10. Jones had a double-double by getting 12 rebounds.

MCLA women 61

BRIDGEWATER -- The Trailblazers (8-11, 0-6) led 10-8 on Danielle Scolpino's 3-point basket with 16:53 left in the first half. Host Bridgewater answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead that the Bears never relinquished.

Lucy Tremblay had 19 points to lead the Trailblazers, who have now dropped seven games. Mariah Brown added 14 points for MCLA.

Four Bridgewater players scored in double figures. Megan Boutilette had a game-high 21 points, while Elisha Homich had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Amherst women 54, Williams 48

AMHERST -- In the second game of a non-league doubleheader, Amherst (18-0) trailed 26-25 at halftime, but pulled away in the second half for the victory.

It's the 12th straight loss against the Jeffs for Williams (15-3).

Claire Baecher led Williams with 11 points. Marcia Voigt had a game-high 16 points for Amherst.
