Woman, 57, dies in fire at Springfield home

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. >> Officials say a 57-year-old woman died and two people were displaced after a fire tore through a Springfield home.

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger says the blaze was reported by an off-duty firefighter who was driving by the St. James Boulevard home on Tuesday.

Leger says the firefighter made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the home.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at about 5:30 p.m. Leger says they were able to remove the woman from the second level of the home. She was taken to Baystate Medical Center where she died. Authorities didn't immediately identify her.

Two people were able to escape with no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
