Works selected for BSC's 10X10 New Play Festival

PITTSFIELD — The fifth annual edition of Barrington Stage Company's 10X10 New Play Festival of 10-minute plays opens Feb. 11 at BSC's St. Germain Stage in the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center, 36 Linden St.

Press opening is 3 p.m. on Feb. 14.

Performances through Feb. 28 are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with matinees at 3 Saturday and Sunday. There is an added 7:30 p.m. performance on Feb. 21.

The plays and playwrights:

• "The Still Point of the Turning World" by Emily Taplin Boyd

1940, London — a librarian trapped during the worst of the Blitz considers the poetry of T.S. Eliot.

• "Thin Air" by Tom Coash

A female tightrope walker tries to set her fears aside and take that first step back onto the wire.

• " '04: A Muse of Fire" by Andrew Dolan

You think you understand Red Sox Yankees enmity?

• "When Babies Fly" by Steven Korbar

On a red-eye flight from New York to London, a screaming child prompts a lively conversation between two strangers.

• "Dr. Kessler" by Ana Nogueira

After four years of relationship bliss, the rose has come off the bloom for Mark and Carol. When they seek the help of a prominent therapist, they receive some unorthodox advice.

• "Eight Seconds" by Sean Harris Oliver

Inside a rodeo corral near Calgary, Alberta, a young man trains to become a bronco rider under the watchful eye of his cowboy father.

• "Best in Class" by Ann Marie Shea

Emily and Roger's divorce is even less successful than their marriage has been, due in some measure to a sloppy division of "assets," including Suzi, the French poodle, and Jack, the Jack Russell terrier.

• "Turtles and Bulldogs" by Scott Sickles

Collin just ran into the guy he had a crush on in high school 35 years later at the cemetery.

• "The Book of Ruth" by Joseph Samuel Wright

Late 1920s — Fentress County, Tenn. A woman returns from Knoxville with a plan for how she and her friend can escape from the prying eyes of everyone in town.

• "Best Lei'd Plans" by Kelly Younger

One beach wedding, two mothers-in-law, four piƱa coladas, and a 'safe word' lead to a surprising new relationship and best laid plans.

Directors for the 10X10 New Play Festival are BSC artistic director Julianne Boyd and John Miller Stephany. Cast members will be announced at a later date.

The New Play Festival is part of the City of Pittsfield's 2016 10X10 Upstreet Arts Festival. which will feature music, theater, dance, film, visual art, spoken word, comedy and performance art.

The festival is a collaborative effort between Barrington Stage Company and the City of Pittsfield, coordinated through a steering committee comprising a number of businesses and cultural organizations.
