Write-in contest emerges for Lenox Planning Board

LENOX -- At the eleventh hour, a write-in contest has emerged just ahead of the annual town election on Monday.

Two write-in candidates are now competing for a four-year slot on the Planning Board. Joining Thomas Delasco, a mechanical engineer with EDM Services in Pittsfield, is local resident Phil Knowles, said Planning Board Chairwoman Kate McNulty-Vaughan.

Knowles, who would be a newcomer to town government, relocated to Lenox with his family in 1990. A graduate of Amherst College, he is a retired executive with the Clairol personal-care division of Procter & Gamble, and taught at Berkshire Country Day School from 1990-92. Since then, he has been a technology consultant.

For a five-year Planning Board post, former board member and Selectwoman Linda Messana is the sole announced write-in candidate.

Only one write-in vote per opening is required for election. Anyone seeking a town government position must be a registered voter in Lenox.

The ballot lists no contests for Select Board and other slots on various town boards. Select Board Chairman William David Roche, Jr., is unopposed for a second term. Warren Archey, retired chief of the state's Bureau of Forestry, is the sole candidate for the Select Board post vacated by John McNinch.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Town Hall.
