Day at the beach
Academy Award-nominee Naomi Watts plays a mother torn from her husband (Ewan McGregor) and sons by the 2004 tsunami in Thailand in ‘The Impossible,' a disaster movie that narrows its focus to one family's survival.
The R-rated drama -- based on the true story of Spanish doctor Maria Belon -- opens Friday at Triplex Cinema in Great Barrington.

Midwinter blues
The eighth annual Blues and Funk Festival kicks off Friday at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams and continues through Saturday night in the Venable gymnasium.
Friday night will feature R&B/
hip-hop artist Maya Azucena. The award-winning MCLA step team, NEUS, will open the show. Khris Royal and Dark Matters will headline the second night, with local blues group Arthur Holmes Band getting the evening started.
