PITTSFIELD - "Human error" is being attributed to a snafu that snared a commercial dump truck lift in power lines along Route 8, near the Lanesborough town line, causing traffic delays for a few hours Friday morning.

The lift of the 16-wheel Peterbilt truck, owned by N. Della Inc. in Adams, was activated while the operator was exiting the Unistress driveway, near the Berkshire Mall. The raised lift caught onto the power lines that run across the driveway and along Route 8. The driver was able to stop the truck before it tore through the lines, but left the front end of the truck precauriously halted in the middle of the northbound lane.

Members of the Pittsfield Fire and Police departments were sent to help secure the scene and redirect traffic.

Norman Dellaghelfa Jr., owner of the truck company, said the incident was "human error" on the operator's part. He said the driver, who has not yet been named, will be disciplined.

The truck remained in place for several hours on Friday, as utility staff from Verizon and Western Massachusetts Electric Company worked to figure out how to safely move the truck without damaging the high-tension power lines.

Public safety officials and members of the truck company on the scene said despite traffic delays, the situation could have been much worse.
