WELLFLEET (AP) -- Wellfleet's animal control officer is urging residents to make sure their pet's vaccinations are up to date after a bat recently tested positive for rabies.
Animal Control Officer Lorial Russell says if vaccinations have expired, pet owners are urged to make an appointment with a veterinarian immediately.
The Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/VErYTl ) reports that up to date vaccinations are required under state law.
A 63-year-old Barnstable man died last year after being bitten by a rabid bat. Health officials say it was the first death from rabies contracted within the state since 1935.
