LANESBOROUGH -- Police here on Monday released the image of a man caught on surveillance video as he walked out of Kay Jewelers at the Berkshire Mall with two diamond rings valued at $9,500 apiece.

The theft took place on Friday at about 5:15 p.m.

Police say the man is possibly Hispanic or bi-racial, is about 25 to 30 years old, and stands between about 5 feet, 8 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall. The man was looking at diamond engagement rings and when the opportunity prevailed the party grabbed two rings valued at $9,500 apiece and fled on foot out through JC Penney's.

He left in a a dark-colored sedan with an antenna on the trunk.

According to police, the man is believed to have cased the store earlier in the week and was observed on surveillance video as being in the Mall most of the day on Friday.

In conversation, the man had told Kay Jewelers employees that he was from Connecticut and had recently bought a house in Cheshire. But police say this was most likely a ruse to put the employees at ease and to make up converstaion.

Police hope the public will recognize the man in the image and help them track down the suspect.

Police also are asking hotels and motels to take a look at the image and note the vehicle in case the man had stayed at a local establishment.
