LANESBOROUGH — Five people and a puppy were injured Thursday morning in a one-vehicle crash along the west side of Cheshire Reservoir.

The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. on Old Cheshire Road, about a half-mile from the Cheshire town line, according to Lanesborough Police. The driver of the vehicle, a 1997 Ford Econoline, told police that the van's brakes failed as he was coming down the hill in the southbound lane. He then crossed over into the other lane and lost control of the van, which flipped on its side, landing in a culvert.

The driver and four passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield for treatment, according to police. The puppy suffered a cut on its head.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
