Asa Stone, Ellie Field each claim 2 wins at Berkshire County Individuals

Left to right, members of Monument Mountain, New Lebanon/Berlin, Mount Anthony, and Taconic Hills prepare for the start of the Girls 200-yard Individual Medley.

GREAT BARRINGTON — As Ellie Field entered the pool on Saturday, it was with the cap of a different school for the third time in her high school swim career.

The Hoosac Valley student — who competed as a Hurricane in eighth grade and freshman year — came back after spending sophomore year playing basketball to swim as a member of St. Joseph last year and then Wahconah this season.

And Field made her presence felt yet again, as she was a two-time individual winner at the Berkshire County League Individuals championship at Bard College at Simon's Rock.

She was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (25.41) and the 100 free (55.82).

"I think it's one of the best experiences any swimmer could have," Field said of representing three schools in her last three trips to the event. "You get to meet so many new swimmers, you get to see so many different coaching styles.

"Wahconah has been so welcoming. A couple of our swimmers had known some of their swimmers. They were just really excited to improve."

But Field wasn't the only two-time individual champ on the girls side on Saturday. Monument Mountain's Asa Stone picked up victories in the 200 individual medley (2:22.08) and 500 free (5:31.49).

"It's a lot of mental stuff, but it's also physical preparing," Stone said of the 500. "When I'm up there, I just tell myself I can do it and I'm in the right mindset. It's a lot of help from [coach] Jill [Svirida], because she's really into that mindset stuff."

Individual wins in other races included Pittsfield's Jordan Bradford in the 200 free (2:06.23), Delaney Ivas of Taconic in the 100 butterfly (1:08.29), Monument's Anna Rubino in the 100 backstroke (1:07.91) and Pittsfield's Szofia Lewis in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.30).

Bradford's win was by over three seconds. Meanwhile, Ivas held off Monument's Jenna Codey by just under two seconds.

An extremely close race occurred late in the day when Anna Rubino finished ahead of teammate Jordyn Louison in the 100 back by .01 seconds. In fact, the top four finishers in the race were separated by only .12 seconds, as Monument's Olivia Rubino finished .06 seconds behind Louison and Taconic's Mikayla Moss was only .05 seconds behind that

Finally, Lewis won the 100 breast by over three seconds before the final relay of the day. That relay — the 400 free — featured the same winning team as the first two relays.

The Spartans won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:59.77 and a team of Stone, Olivia Raifstanger, Aubrey Blanchard and Louison.

Later on, in the 200 free relay, Louison, Blanchard and the Rubinos registered a time of 1:47.72. Finally, Blanchard, the Rubinos and Stone teamed up for a time of 3:58.16 in the aforementioned 400 free relay.

The swim season continues on Sunday, Feb. 11 with the Western Massachusetts championships at the Art Linkletter Natatorium at Springfield College. The girls will begin at 9 a.m.
