Black Rock FC rockets up Premier Development League power rankings

Black Rock's Quentin van der Lee, a 2017 graduate of Berkshire School and current player at Trinity, heads the ball.

After five games, Black Rock FC has already established its presence in the Premier Development League.

The Great Barrington-based outfit checked in at No. 2 on the PDL's Eastern Conference Power Rankings this week after a pair of victories. Black Rock was not ranked last week.

Black Rock recorded a 3-2 win over GPS Portland Saturday last week then followed it up with a 2-1 win over 2017 Northeast Division champion Seacoast United Phantoms Sunday, a team that Black Rock drew with, 1-1, earlier in the campaign.

Black Rock currently sits on top of the Northeast Division standings after it's 2-0-0 week last week at 3-0-2. The team has 11 points to Boston Bolts' 10, and Black Rock has a chance to extend that gap Saturday when they host the Bolts at Hotchkiss School at 6:30 p.m.

Ifyanyachi Achara will be one player to look at in the contest with the Bolts. Achara, a rising junior at Georgetown, leads the team with four goals so far this season and has also added an assist. His goal total puts him two behind the PDL lead, but he is tops in the Eastern Conference in scoring.

Achara's success on the pitch has translated to awards off of it. Achara was named to the PDL's Team of the Week for Week 5. Achara had two goals and an assist in Week 5 to secure the nod.

Achara isn't the only Black Rock player to be recognized by the league. Goalkeeper Giovani Rello earned PDL Save of the Week honors in Week 3 after coming up with a stellar save on a close-range header against the Westchester Flames that helped preserve a 2-2 draw on the road.

Other team leaders for Black Rock include David Egbo with a team-high two assists, while Theo Quartey has logged the most minutes so far, playing 391 of a possible 450 minutes this season. Quartey has a goal and an assist, as well.

After the game against the Boston Bolts Saturday, Black Rock FC gears up for an interesting four-game stretch.

On Tuesday Black Rock will host the Western Mass Pioneers. The team then goes to AC Connecticut on June 15, before playing a home-and-home with the Pioneers on June 19 and June 22.

That's the only team that Black Rock plays three times this season.
