GREAT BARRINGTON — When Nick Dillon touched the wall first to emerge victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday, the Monument Mountain swimmer won a race he had seldom competed in this season.
Dillon finished the race in 1:10.12, which was over four seconds faster than the closest competitor.
This came after he picked up his first individual victory of the day in the 50 freestyle, as he finished in 24.26. That was just under one-half second faster than Zachary LaForest of Mount Anthony.
"I try not to swim the same events I'm going to swim at Western Mass.," Dillon said. "I was deciding between the 100 fly and the 100 breast, so I wanted to see how fast I could go and what it was like.
"This might have been my second time swimming the 100 breast this year [for high school], but with the club team I do it a little bit more."
Dillon was the only boy at the Berkshire County League Individuals championship at Bard College at Simon's Rock to finish with two individual victories. Teammate Harry Albert almost matched the feat, as he won the 500 free and then appeared to win the 100 backstroke, but the latter victory was changed after officials decided Wahconah's Joshua Kunzmann touched the wall first.
Albert won the 500 free by over 25 seconds, finishing in 5:33.03 and Kunzmann outlasted Albert by .51 seconds in the 100 back. Kunzmann touched the wall in 1:07.14.
Other individual winners included Wahconah's Noah Schweitzer in the 200 free (2:04.61) by .53 seconds, LaForest in the 100 free (54.14) by over one second and Pittsfield's Liam Mooney in the 100 butterfly (59.67) by almost seven seconds.
"I was going into [the 100 fly] pretty confident, because my seed time was about seven seconds faster than the next person," Mooney said. "I didn't get a best time. The one person from Monument who usually swims really close with me and pushes me wasn't swimming it."
Mount Anthony's Anthony Mazzola also picked up an individual win. He was the only contestant in the 200 individual medley and finished in 2:49.61.
As for the relays, Mount Anthony — which finished the regular season undefeated — took the first two races. Aaron Mattison, Mazzola, Devin Deets and LaForest finished the 200 medley relay in 1:57.85. Meanwhile, the same foursome won the 200 free relay in 1:41.21.
Finally, the Generals' quartet of Connor Hayford, Dan Fitzgibbons, Connor Mooney and Liam Mooney won the final race of the day — the 400 free relay — in 3:52.96.
"We have lost that relay every single time except for our most recent meet, which was our last meet," Liam Mooney said, referring to a dual meet against Monument. "We've lost that relay for years. We were hoping to prove that wasn't a fluke and that we could do it again."
