NORTH ADAMS - A former Adams police officer who served jail time for child pornography possession has been arrested again. Alan C. Vigiard, 51, of Berkshire Square, Adams, is being held without the right to bail following his arraignment Wednesday in Northern Berkshire District Court. In October, State Police detectives received a tip that a pornographic image of a girl, approximately 12 to 14 years old had been uploaded to a chat room on chatstep.com on May 27, 2016. Police traced the image to Vigiard's home computer. When he was released after a year in jail in July 2012, Vigiard was barred from accessing the internet as part of his probation. Vigiard's internet account was deactivated on June 1, about a week after the pornographic image was discovered, but Vigiard told police he had recently gotten internet access again. Investigators later subpoenaed Vigiard's phone records that showed he was accessing the internet from January into October of this year. On Tuesday, police with a warrant searched Vigiard's home and vehicle. During his interview with police, Vigiard admitted he had internet access in his apartment and used a tablet and cell phone to access pornography. During a bout of depression in January, Vigiard said he became self-destructive and started watching adult and child pornography. To police, Vigiard described visiting chat rooms, exchanging porn with others, and saving images on his tablet. He told police he uploaded images to chatstep.com, but was eventually blocked after uploading illicit images, according to investigators. Vigiard said he thought he'd deleted the child pornography he had downloaded, but if the files were still accessible, they'd be on a pair of computer tablets he owned. The tablets, a USB thumb drive containing adult and child pornography, a cell phone, and multiple DVDs and magazines featuring adult pornography were seized in Tuesday's police search of his apartment. Wednesday, Vigiard entered not guilty pleas to charges of possession of child pornography (second offense) and dissemination of child pornography. He is due back in court on Monday for a pretrial hearing. The case could end up in Berkshire Superior Court. In May 2011, Vigiard pleaded guilty to 10 counts of child pornography possession and was sentenced to two years in jail, followed by five years of probation with the conditions of counseling, no possession of a computer or phone with Internet access, no access of pornography or child erotica, and permission for probation to search any computer or media device which could store pornographic materials. Vigiard resigned from the Adams Police Department after being charged in November 2009 and accused of spending between one and six hours per shift viewing pornography, including child pornography, in the department's evidence room. Vigiard was charged after being confronted with a CD given to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office in October 2009 showing images of child pornography on a police computer in the evidence room. The CD also contained images of a man, later identified as Vigiard, masturbating in the evidence room. During his time with the department, Vigiard was its child exploitation officer and officer for computer crimes. Reach staff writer Bob Dunn at 413-496-6249 or @BobDunn413 on Twitter.
