LANESBOROUGH — A truck dealership was damaged in a fire Thursday that temporarily shut down a busy state road.Nearly 30 firefighters responded to a blaze that broke out at Village Truck Sales on Cheshire Road, according to Lanesborough Fire Department spokesman P.J. Pannesco.

The fire was reported around 5:40 p.m. at 800 Cheshire Road. When firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered heavy flames and black smoke coming from the building, said Pannesco, who is former Lanesborough Fire Chief.

Firefighters got the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

While there was damage to equipment inside the metal building, the structure itself is "certainly repairable," Pannesco said.

He was hesitant to estimate the cost of damages. "It sounded like we'd be there all night," he said of the initial call.

The dealership is on the other end of town from the firehouse, he said. Two Lanesborough Fire Department engines and a tanker responded. Cheshire Fire Department also sent an engine with four firefighters, Pannesco said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Village Truck Sales, which sells vehicles and other heavy equipment, was closed when the fire broke out, but the owner and his son were on scene during the response, Pannesco said.

A portion of Route 8 was shut down from while fire crews worked.
